Gen AI Policy

INSTINK (Inovasi Pendidikan, Teknologi Informasi & Komputer) recognizes the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models (LLMs) and generative AI, as tools that can support academic writing and research. Their use must be transparent, responsible, and consistent with academic integrity. This policy applies to authors, editors, and reviewers.

1. Authorship
AI tools (such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini) do not meet the criteria for authorship and cannot be listed as an author or co-author. Authorship carries legal and scientific responsibility for the published work; AI tools have no legal standing, cannot agree to copyright or license terms, and cannot be held accountable for the content of a manuscript.

2. Disclosure
Authors must disclose any use of generative AI in preparing their manuscript in the Declaration of Generative AI Use section of the manuscript (see the journal template). If no generative AI was used, authors must state this explicitly. The declaration must include:

  • the name of the tool (and version, if relevant); and
  • the specific purpose of its use (for example, translation assistance, language editing, or restructuring text).

Non-generative spelling and grammar checkers (such as those built into word processors) do not need to be declared, provided they do not alter the scientific substance of the manuscript.

3. Author Accountability

  • Authors are fully responsible for the accuracy, validity, and originality of the entire manuscript.
  • Generative AI can produce incorrect, biased, or incomplete information, including fictitious references (“hallucinations”). Authors must verify every statement and reference produced with the help of AI.
  • Unreviewed AI-generated text may lead to unintentional plagiarism. Authors must ensure that the manuscript is original and meets the journal’s similarity requirements.

4. Images and Multimedia
Images, diagrams, or scientific illustrations created or manipulated with generative AI are not permitted, as they may compromise the integrity of research data. The only exception is research that specifically studies AI technology or AI-based visual design; in such cases, the use must be clearly described in the manuscript.

5. Editors

  • Editors must not upload manuscripts under review, including abstracts, tables, or data, to public generative AI tools. Doing so breaches confidentiality and the authors’ rights, as the content may be stored or used to train AI models.
  • Generative AI must not be used to make, or to replace the reasoning behind, any editorial decision, including initial screening, reviewer selection, acceptance, or rejection. All decisions are made by, and are the responsibility of, the editors.
  • Editors may use non-generative tools provided by the journal, such as similarity-check software, reference and DOI validation, and the journal management system. Generative AI may be used only for tasks that do not involve confidential manuscript content, such as improving the language of general correspondence.

6. Reviewers

  • Reviewers must not upload manuscripts under review, or any part of them, to generative AI tools.
  • Reviewers must not use generative AI to evaluate a manuscript or to draft, write, or summarize their review reports. Peer review requires the reviewer’s own expertise and critical judgment.
  • Reviewers are fully responsible for the content of their reports. Reports suspected of being generated by AI will be disregarded, and the reviewer may be removed from the reviewer database.

7. Violations
Undisclosed or inappropriate use of generative AI by authors, editors, or reviewers is considered a breach of publication ethics and will be handled in accordance with the journal’s Publication Ethics policy and the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Sample Declaration of Generative AI Use

If generative AI was used:
“During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used [name of tool and version] to [purpose, e.g., improve readability and language]. After using this tool, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and take full responsibility for the content of the publication.”

If generative AI was not used:
“The author(s) did not use generative AI in the preparation of this manuscript.”
